WATCH: Timelapse shows giant ice sheet break off near Chicago’s lakefront

The polar vortex brought more than just snow and subzero temperatures to the Chicago area. It also brought the conditions for parts of Lake Michigan to freeze over. Now as the long winter thaw begins, ice sheets are breaking off near the lakefront.
A camera atop the Hancock facing north captured the impressive ice break up. The camera belongs to WGN. Notice Lakeshore Drive, Gold Coast lakefront high-rises, and North Avenue Beach.
