Netflix has revealed new data projecting Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead to be one of the most popular original films on the streaming service.

Via Twitter, Netflix reported that the zombie action movie Army of the Dead is on the way to be one of the most successful films ever on the platform. Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead spiritual sequel was bought by Netflix after working on it for nearly a decade at previous home studio Warner Bros. The platform was anxious to collaborate with the former DC Extended Universe filmmaker, so the development and production cycle was accelerated.

Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Tig Notaro, and Ral Castillo all star in the film.

Though the film did not appeal to all reviewers and fans, it was evident from the start that Army of the Dead would become a huge hit for Netflix. From Snyder’s existing fan base from his comic book adaptations to the high they were riding with HBO Max’s Justice League, it would have been surprising if viewership didn’t spill over.

While the film’s box office statistics remain relatively modest, the fact that 72 million households are on course to view it within a month of its Netflix launch is nevertheless quite significant. Given that Netflix doubled down on the project with both a live-action prequel film and an anime series, the anticipated success and early figures for Army of the Dead indicate that Netflix made the right decision in putting their faith in the project.

It looks like Snyder also has a promising future at Netflix, with signals of a potential sequel and a sense of liberty recreating the world of the zombie apocalypse for the streaming platform. Fans should keep an eye out for the prequel Army of Thieves, which will be released later this year on Netflix.
